Global Warming and Its Effects

Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere. It is a change that is believed to be permanently changing the climate of the Earth. One of the biggest problems faced by the world today is global warming. Many scientists believe that production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases makes the atmosphere hot. This is very dangerous for the existence of life on the Earth.

The effects of global warming are dangerous and can pose a severe threat to the survival of both humans and animals. Agriculture, forestry and fishery are seriously harmed due to global warming. As the temperature of water increases, the fauna and flora are deprived of their natural habitat. This stops them from their natural growth. The climatic changes are seen worldwide.

Exceptional warm summers arc another effect of global warming. Various countries in Europe have witnessed these changes significantly. Scientists are working to predict how the heat building in the seas and atmosphere will affect the strength, intensity and occurrence of the typhoons, storms and cyclones. According to the scholars, since 1981, the maximum wind speeds of the strongest tropical cyclones have increased. The melting glaciers, polar ice caps and other frozen grounds of the world arc causing rise in the levels of water bodies. This will result in flooding and shifting of human population. The increased floods and damages to sewage and water set-ups spread diseases.

The ozone layer keeps out the ultra violet radiations from the sun that harms lives on the Earth. Some human made gases rises into the atmosphere and destroys the ozone layer by making it thinner. Therefore, global warming involves the pollution of the atmosphere, which in turn leads to the reduction of the ozone layer. Global warming will delay the ozone recovery at Arctic regions. This will make people expose to ultra violet rays from the sun. The penetration of the more ultra violet radiations from the sun to the Earth poses threats to lives and diseases like skin cancer.

Global warming also disturbs the food chain. Ultra violet rays kill very small forms of plants and animals that live in seawater. Marine creatures like fishes and whales that live in seas would eventually starve and disappear. This would then affect those creatures that live on fish.

Global warming is a man-made cause. If we make small changes now in the way we live, we can avoid hazardous changes in the future. Together we can make a difference! Scientists, Governments and common people are working together to overcome the threat of global warming.
