Can Loyalty To One’s Region Co-Exist With One’s Loyalty To One’s Nation?

It is rightly observed that loyalty to one’s region can co-exist with loyalty to one’s nation. Loyalty means faithfulness. If a person wants to be faithful to his own region, he must also be faithful to his nation. As far as loyalty to one’s nation is concerned one must first be loyal to one’s local area. Loyalty is the soul of a nation. Nation and loyalty go hand in hand. By no means can a nation co-exist without loyalty and vice versa. In the absence of loyalty, a nation will be regarded as meaningless. A nation can progress only through loyalty. Thus, nation and loyalty co-exist side by side.

There is not one loyalty that a man has to perform in life. There are different domains in the world. Loyalty to one’s wife and children is not the same as the loyalty to one’s brothers, sisters and parents. We have to give every member of the family a different measure of consideration.

There is no antagonism between loyalty to our region and to our country. The Constitution of India is based on that consideration. It is federal in character. Where regional interests clash, our loyalty is to our region. But where national interests clash with other nations, our loyalty is to our nation and all regional interests must be shelved. That is why in case of war against a foreign power the whole nation stands up as one man and regional differences are forgotten. It is only in peacetime that the regional interests persist and plague our Legislative Assemblies and Parliament.

There is nothing to worry about if the politicians are allowed to let out their regional steam in peaceful times. It is only when the regionalisms begin to play in the hands of the foreign powers to undermine their own nation as fifth columnists that we have to think of regionalism as a serious menace, as Pakistan’s interference in Kashmir, China’s subversive activities in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Bangladesh’s underhand activities and infiltration into Assam. It is at such times that we need leaders like Subhas Chandra Bose and Jawaharlal Nehru who can pilot the ship of State in the right direction. It was on such an occasion that Jawaharlal Nehru said, “Freedom is in peril. Defend it with all your might”.

Patriotism is a lesson that must be taught to the children while they are still young. In India today, regionalism indeed, is getting the upper hand and nationalism is being relegated to the dunghill of petty politics. There are a number of people in India today who are willing to sell their mother land for pelf, power and possessions. Unless we curb regionalism, linguism and communalism, we are heading for a disaster.

On such occasions we need statesmen who should teach the masses to distinguish between different kinds of loyalties, viz., loyalty to one’s family, loyalty to one’s region, loyalty to one’s country, loyalty to the world and loyalty to the universe. That is the real purpose of education in schools and college. The teachers must fulfill their duty and guide the erring students so that they do not grow up to be chauvinistic terrorists.
