It was a very enthusiastic and enjoyable morning on March 1, 2003 in Centurian Park when a thrilling match between traditional rivals India and Pakistan was just about to begin. The moments of awaiting had ended and we were on our seats to witness this long awaited match. Pakistan won the toss and prepared itself to bat first.

In the end by the blessings of one billion plus people India succeeded to give a defeat by 6 wickets to Pakistan and to shatter their hopes and pride. The credit mainly goes to humble but confident Sachin Tendulkar for India’s victory. It was one of the most enjoyable cricket match of our lives which is unforgettable. When Pakistan lost anybody could see the gloomy faces of Pakistani cricketers. But they deserved that humiliation. Pride always has a fall. How were they boasting on T. V. Screen even before the match started. Shoib Akhatr gave statement that he would target Sachin. The Pakistani captain Waquar Yunis was also overconfident. In the end they bit the dust. On the other side India from the very beginning to the end remained calm and took its victory with humility. Live long India.

On 183 run our heart beat increased and it seemed that India might loose the match. But because Rahul Dravid saved India from defeat.

As the sun came to a halt tantalisingly on top of the Centurion park, ThePakistanis trooped in proudly and confidently. Tension had already mounted in the stands and nervous energy flew rapidly. It was a cauldron in the middle as Sachin Tendulkar and Verendra Sehwag steeped out like gladiators with no escape route.

Within a few overs, everything evaporated into thin aim as the dynamic duo launched a stunning assault on the Pakistani bowlers. Wasim Akram first over went for nine runs and the dreaded Shoaib Akhtar first over for 19 runs. It was a kind of start that even the most ardent Indian supporters won’t have dreamt against a formidable Pakistani attack. Waquar Younis promptly moved the Rawalpindi Express and brought himself.

Two overs later, India has stopped into the cauldron again and were burning from 53 for no loss, they crashed to 53 for two as Pakistani Captain lured Sehwag into a succeeded drive and these trapped Saurav Ganguly in front of the wicket and handed him a duck. The deafening roars were replaced by a screeching silence on the stadium.

But Tendulkar continued assault in the company of Mohammad Kaif who was promoted in the order in a valiant gamble. He soon crossed the 50 run barrier with a flick that raced to square leg. He was gifted four more runs in the form of overthrow as the entire stadium stood up to salute the little master. Kaif too pushed the tempo with authoritative drives. However both Kaif and Tendulkar got out and India were 183 for 4 in 29 overs. Tendulkar missed his century by just two runs.

Earlier Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first on a super sport pitch they racked up a challenging 273 for seven, riding or a controlled century by their opener Saied Anwar. Zaheer Khan started the proceedings for India with a series of extras wides were followed with no balls and they lost the opportunity to convert the early life in wicket to something meaningful.

Javagal Srinath too went for three boundaries in his opening over. After the high of Durban it was clearly going to be a testing time for the Indian bowlers. It got further under lined. When Ashish Nehra, the hero against England arrived to give the expressive Zaheer a rest. His first ball was short and wide outside the off stump. It went for a cracking cut. Runs continued to flow at a steady pace as India struggled against the left-handed duo of Anwar and Taufiq Umar.

Battle scarred Answar slowly discovered his wristy touch. Cuts followed drives and pulls followed cuts as Pakistani got off to a good start.

Umar too went on the offensive but he was finally deceived by Zaheer. lnziman lifted Anil Kumble over his head to show his intentions.

But next over, he was running to the pavilion following a run out mix up with Anwar. Pakistan were suddenly in trouble at 98 for three.

But with Anwar rolling away smoothly, and Yousuf Youhana digging heels in, they were back in steady waters Ganguly and his bowlers swiftly could not cut off Anwar’s procession shots.

It was only when he brought on Srinath that the breakthrough materialised. He did not take any chances with his bowlers and finished off Srinath and Kumble overs. Ganguly relied on the pace of Nehra and Zaheer to tackle the death and they managed to keep run rate in control. The Indian captain used himself Sehwag and Mongia to complete to other ten overs.

Anwar reached his third century in the world cup with a single to long off. Two deliveries later he was bowled by Nehra.

Younis Khan held the images together with an intelligent 32 while Rashid Latif gave their innings the final spirit. After a rollar coaster run-ride, it all started happening in the 49th over. Zaheer hit Latif on his halmet with a bouncer, then bowled Akram off a no ball.

Next over he dived full length to his left to stop a shot and Sehwag showed deft footwork as they stopped two certain boundaries. But Akram eventfully had the last laugh. He hit the last two deliveries to boundaries to lift Pakistan to 273 for seven wickets. In the end India won the match with sparkling Sachin’s game.
