From among several matinee idol’s and silver screen sensations, if we have to choose one with greatness and popularity combined in his personality, it will be, by all standards of judgement, none other than Amitabh Bachchan. The Big B as his countless fans call him, started his illustrated career with Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, `Saath Hindustani’ released in 1969 as a tall, funky young star. He kept playing second fiddle to the stars of that period for quite some time. Though he failed to make any lasting impression, his determination eventually paid him in the form of ‘Zanjeer’ in the early seventies, the first blockbuster with Amitabh playing the protagonist. This film along with ‘Trishul’ and ‘Deewar’ proved to be trendsetter etching his image as angry youngman in the hearts of millions of cine viewers Subsequent releases, like ‘Bombay to Goa’, ‘Amar-Akbar-Anthony’. The ‘Great Gambler’, ‘Mukaddar Ka Sikandar’ etc. have only revealed streaks of histrionic versatility and genius this most brilliant thespian in the history of Indian motion picture possesses.
The elder son to famous Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan, Amitabh was born in Allahabad on October 11, 1942. He had his early education in Doon School and higher education in Kirore Mal College (Delhi). After completing his studies he got a job with Kolkata based company. But he quit it soon to woo his first love acting and went to Mumbai to try his luck. The moment he got his first major break in Bollywood, there was no looking back for him.
The spring of glorious achievement stretching for about two decades was followed by a series of crises in 1980. In 1982 he met with near fatal accident while shooting for Coolie. Shortly afterwards, he fell prey to nerve disorder. In the late 1980 s his name was dragged in controversial Bofors kickbacks and the worst came with the fiasco of his business venture ABCL.
The enormous courage, determination and will power with which he stood against all odds and got back to the centerstage, speak of glorious and highly inspiring saga of struggles of a great personality to stay alive in the midst of numerous ordeals of fate. He was again at his best when hosted `Kaun Banega Crorepati’, India’s most popular T.V. game show orgnized by Star Plus. It added another feather to his cap of colossal achievements. He was honoured by BBC as the best Actor of Millennium and by International Films Academy in 2002 as Personality of the year.
