Dame Agatha Christie is the most popular detective fiction writer of our times. Her detective stories have become tremendously popular all over the world. They are full of suspense and thrill. For over half a century she reigned over the world of detective fiction as a queen. Her popularity can be known from the fact that works of no writer except Shakespeare is sold in such a huge number as of Christie. The Guinness Book of Records carries her name as the most successful of all novelists. ‘Agatha Christie wrote more than 50 detective novels and all of them highly successful.. The detective stories of Agatha Christie have marvel-lous plots and they keep the readers guessing right up to the last page and when finally the myStery is solved, readers are startled. Some of the best known detective fiction works of Agatha Christie are: ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ (Many people think that it is her best work), ‘A Murder is Announced’, ‘And Then There Were None. She was also a highly successful playwright. Her play, ‘The Mousetrap’ has been continuously performed in the London’s West End Theatre for the last more than 30 years.

Agatha Christie was born of a rich American father and an English mother in Devon in 1891. Her childhood name was Agatha Miller. In 1914, before the outbreak of the First World War, Agatha married a pilot named Archibald Christie. And so now Agatha Miller became Agatha Christie. Her first novel, ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ was published in .1926. She divorced her husband and married an archaeologist, Sir Max Mallowen. Agatha spent a few months with her husband every year in Iraq where she had gone for excavation work and many of her books were written during’ her stay in Iraq.

She died in 1976, at the age of 85.
