Kafka is considered a very interesting writer of modern Germany. He was unfortunate in not getting attention during his lifetime. He could get only a couple of stories published during his lifetime, while a large biddy of his works was later edited and published by his friend Marx Brand. His was a lonely and anguished existence. His mental state is clearly reflected in his writings which are full of alienation and desperation. His ideas influenced literature of later years. For Kafka, literature meant happiness derived out of terrible torture. He searched wholeness in fragments. His famous works are — Judgement, Stoker, Metamorphosis, Penal Colony, Country Doctor, Hunger Artist, The Trial, Meditation. The credit for bringing his works into limelight goes to his friend Marx Brand. The world today recognizes their depth and the existential strain in them.

Kafka was born on 3 July 1883 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in a Jewish family. He had planned to study German language but by the time he entered Prague University, he developed interest in literature, so he completed his doctorate instead, and in 1908, he started working for an insurance company.

Kafka remained a bachelor but he had some good women friends. His love-affairs with Dora, Felis and Hansy are well-known. He died when forty. But in life he saw agony only.

He was a Jew and was subjected to neglect and torture which told upon his mental peace. His literature speaks of the agonies of life and its harsh realities. Like Talmud, he reveals in his writings the futility of human existence and the absurdity of human situation.
