Benjamin Disreali

When a slim and young Jew, British Member of Parliament rose to make his first speech, he was jeered at by the members. The 32- year old MP sat down saying, “I will sit down today but the time will come when you will be listening to me attentively”, and that time did come when later he was twice the British Prime Minister. Disreali was an independent member of Parliament in his first year. Later, he joined the Conservative Party. He became Prime Minister for the first time in 1868, but the liberals won the next elections. However, in 1874 he again became the Prime Minister.

Disreali holds a prominent place in the British politics for many reasons. He passed a bill to stop the illegal strikes that had become daily occurrences. He passed the Merchant Shipping Act which stopped over-loading of ships. Besides, he adopted a successful foreign policy. When Russia planned to occupy certain parts of Turkey at the Berlin Congress, he sent a British armada to help Turkey. He sent troops to Afghanistan to prevent Soviet troops from entering India through Afghanistan.

One of his outstanding and bold acts was to acquire shares in Suez canal from the King of Egypt, without the approval of Parliament. The Parliament was not in session at that time but the Act was wholly in favour of England. England paid forty lakh pounds and got the right to use the canal which was a considerable shortcut to India. His imaginative policies and foresight brought him great success and popularity. He died in 1881.
