Many a scientist in India has gone unhonoured despite having done lot of work, whose importance is no less than that of actual invention or research. Albert Einstein, the originator of Quantum Theory, had published his work in the German language. It is not the question of only translation, it was a matter of understanding the theory also.

Meghnad Saha was born in Saroyatali village in Dacca (now in Bangladesh) on 6 October 1894. His father owned a small shop in the village and wanted his son to study for few years and then look after the shop, but Meghnad had aptitude for studies. When he came to Calmitta for doing his M.Sc. he came into contact with eminent scientists like Jagdish Chandra Bose and Dr Prafulla Chandra Rai. This brought Meghnad a new interest in science.

Dr Saha worked with many international scientists and also researched in the field of Astrophysics. He invented an instrument to measure the weight and pressure of solar rays.

Dr Saha did not just sit and work in his laboratory. He was also aware of country’s problem. In 1913, Pt Nehru appointed him Director of Indian Science Association. He prepared the original plan for Damodar Valley project. He was also a member of Lok Sabha. He was interested in welfare of the nation apart from his involvement in scientific studies. On 16 February 1956, Saha collapsed while on way to Parliament and died.

Dr Saha has a special place among Indian scientists.
