Lokenath Brahmachari
Lokenath Brahmachari was born in a village Kachuya near Barasat in the 24-Parganas district (West Bengal) in the year 1731. His father’s name was Ramkanai Ghosal and mother’s name was Kamala Devi.
Sri Lokenath was admitted at the age of ten to the nearby primary school of Bhagaban Ganguly. Bhagaban Ganguly was not only well versed in the Shastras but was also a great Sadhaka. At the time of Lokenath’s “Holy-thread” ceremony a remarkable incident happened. During that period, there is a custom that the boy would remain a “Dandi—Brahmachari” for three days alone in a room. His Acharya — Guru Bhagaban Ganguly pre-planned that at that time he (Guru) will leave the house for ever as a wandering ascetic (Pro-brajya) with Lokenath along his friend Benimadhab. With the consent of their parents, Sri Ganguly (then 60 yrs. old) left home for6ver with his two disciples both aged eleven years old.
First of all they came to the Kalighat temple at Kolkata. During that time, Kalighat was a dense jungle with wild plants and herbs. Sadhakas and Sannyasis assembled for their sadhana and Trantric Kriya. Acharya Ganguly trained them here for a-few days and finally went to the Himalayas for the further training etc. They were trained here in the different stages of Brahmacharya with strict discipline for nearby thirty years. At that time, Bhagaban Ganguly became very old and was unable to control them. Then he handed over Sri Lokenath and Sri Benimadhab to Yogi Hitalal Mishra and took leave of them forever.
There is no doubt that Lokenath’s future life was guided by yogi Hitalal. Both Lokenath and his friend Benimadhab travelled in the interior of the Himalayas and Tibet. Later on, yogi Hitalal advised them to come down to the plains for the benefit of mankind.
During his long life for nearly 159 years, Sri Lokenath spent nearly 100 years in meditation. He also visited other countries, viz. China, Bhutan, Afghanistan and even Mecca, Medina etc. to realise the Omnipresent Brahma-Sakti or the Truth. Ultimately, he attained the Divine Grace, following different paths of worship. At last during the last phase of his spiritual advancement he was endowed with the occult power, i.e. Siddhai.
This Siddhai enabled him to move as an incorporeal body throughout the world to answer the urgent need of his devotees. There were so many examples, which cannot be dealt with within the compass of this short article. He was deferential to all the religious paths —Hinduism, Islam and Christianity etc. He had both Hindu and Muslim devotees. He once narrated an event to his devotees: when he was travelling throughout the world; through the deserts enroute to Medina, he met a very highly religious Fakir, named Md. Abdul Gofur, who was 400 years old- at that time. His acquaintance with Md. Abdul Gofur reminded him Trailanga Swami of Varanasi.
He came in contact with many enlightened persons : One of them was the Sadhak Bijoykrishna Goswami. Bijoykrishna Goswami also acknowledged his disciples his indebtedness to Shri Lokenath Brahmachari for his spiritual upliftment.
In the later part of his life, Brahmachariji came to the place Barodi, near Dacca (now in Bangladesh) and settled there till his death.
He left his mortal body at Barodi in the month of May, 1890 at the age of 159 years.
