Goswami Tulsidas
Goswami Tulsidas was born on 1543 at the Rajpur village in the district Banda, near Prayag in U.P. His father’s name was Pandit. Atmaram Dwivedi and mother’s name was Halsi Devi. During his early age he lost his parents and fostered by his father’s Gurudev Sri Narasing Dass. He married to Ratnabali Devi at an early age.
Since boyhood, he was very much hankering for the real knowledge of Sastra-dharma and to fulfil his ambition he came to the Varanasi. There he became a student of famous Pandit Sri Sanatan Das. During his student life, he studied the Sanskrit language very eagerly and simultaneously very, much interested to know the life history of Purusottam Sri Ramachandra. From this time, his mind was hankering for a Divya darshan of Lord Sri
Ramachandra. After a long forbearance with endless patience and prolong meditation, Mahabir Hanumanji revealed himself to Tulsidas at Varanasi. By his advice, he went to the holy places of Chitrakut, Vrindaban, Ayodhya. Dandakaranya, Naimisaranya etc to have direct experiences from Sri Ramachandra’s places of activities (Leelasthal).
At last, by dint of his heart-felt meditation and continuous prayer with tearful eyes, the auspicious and favourable moment appeared to his life. At Chitrakut, one fine morning when Tulsidas was busy for his morning prayer then Purusottam Sri Ramchandra revealed Himself in front of Tulsidas in the form of a pleasant looking divine cheerful boy with a bow in his hand. There is a hearsay that Sri Ramachandra Blessed him and assured him that His significant and unintelligible work (Leela) would be everlasting in his mind and his long-cherished desire will be fulfilled. Also, He advised him to write His activities in a pleasant poetic language which will be easily understandable for the common people and that will be the “New-Ramayana” in this present Kali-yuga.
His greatest achievement was to compose “Sri Rarnacharit Manas” in the Common language of `Audhi-Hindi’ and ‘Brajabali’ combination. But before that he studied thoroughly the Valmiki-Ramayana in sanskrit, Yogabashistha, Adhyatma-Ramayana, Uttar-Ramacharitra-manasa, Raghuvansa, Srimad-Bhagabatam and many other Hindu mythological books.
Goswami Tulsidasji possessed the accumulation of diversive qualities. He was not only a great poet and philosopher, he was a renowned saint and powerful Yogacharya. Also, he was agitated by feeling the sorrows
and miseries of the poor and the downtrodden people. Many such people were favoured by his benevolent activities and prayers.
He left his mortal body near Assighat at Varanasi on 1623.
