Polo

This is a game which is played on horseback by players who try to move a small ball into the opponent’s goal with the help of a mallet. Polo was probably first invented and played in Persia in the 1st century. Polo did not originate as a game it was initially used to train soldiers. It then became popular in the royal families and noblemen. With the passage of time the game spread to the neighbouring countries. The game came to India sometime in the 13th century.

It was in India that the Europeans were exposed to it. In the last quarter of the 19th century this game was first played in England and about a decade later in America. Polo is popular in a few countries, the horses used for this game are thorough breads and well trained. One of the reasons why it is not become very popular world over is because of the high costs of maintaining a team and the horses.
