The Babylonians
The land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers was the home of the first civilisation about 6000 years ago. The people who lived here were called the Babylonians. Since the land on which they lived was very fertile, they largely depended upon farming through refined farming methods. The Babylonians were the first to build cities, and develop a method of writing. One of the first cities they developed was Babylon which went on to become an important trading centre. The Babylonians rose to the peak of prosperity under their king Hamurabi. They were ruled by another great king called Nebucadnezzar-II between 605 and 562 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar captured a large area including Jerusalem and expanded the empire. The empire fell when Babylon was captured by the Persians and then by the Romans. Under the Romans the city of Babylon was reduced to ruins.
