Life in the Savannah
Savannah are grasslands in the tropical areas where rain is seasonal and the atmosphere is generally dry and dusty. The African savannah are the most famous in the world and are inhabited by a large number of grazing hooved animals including Deer, Antelopes, Gazelles, Zebras, Wildebeests etc and predators like Lions, Cheetahs, Jackals and Hyenas. Among the birds there are larger ones like the Ostrich and the smaller ones include Oxpeckers, Shrikes, Bulbuls, Cranes, Hornbills etc and scavengers like the White headed Vulture, and the Griffon Vulture. Besides these there are the Giraffes, Elephants and the Rhinos. Nature maintains it’s balance by regulating the population of the herbivores and the carnivores, grass and plant eaters graze in the plains which also provide adequate cover to the carnivores like the Lions and Cheetahs who hunt down and live off the deer and zebras etc. The remains of their hunt provide food to the scavengers like the hyenas and vultures.
