1. Do you know who Bapu was? He was none other than Mahatma Gandhi. He was given the name Bapu, meaning father, out of love and respect.

2. He was the father of our nation. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

3. Mohandas was born on 2 October, 1869 at Porbandar in Saurashtra.

4. As a little boy, he was not fond of studies, but grew up to be very clever. He went to school at a place known as Rajkot. Later, when he grew up, he went to England to study law, and became a barrister.

5. From England, he went to South Africa to practice law. He was shocked to find how badly the white people treated the ‘blacks’.

6. He made up his mind to stop this ill-treatment because he believed that everyone was equal.

7. Bapu came back to India. He worked towards making India free. He taught us the true meaning of ‘Ahimsa’ that is fighting without violence.

8. He taught us to be kind, loving and truthful. Many young, educated Indians followed in Bapu’s footsteps and bravely gave up their lives to free India from foreign rule.

9. Among them were Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Jinnah and many other freedom fighters.

10. Whenever we think of those bygone days, Bapu or Mahatma Gandhi, as he came to be known as, will always be remembered, for he was truly a very great leader.
