Dear Lalit,
I was long under the impression that India was a land of sadhus, beggars, cobras and jugglers. That was the image stamped on my mind through books I read in my childhood and youth.
When I went to see the Festival of India, I was indeed looking for sadhus and serpents. I was amazed when I did not find either of them; and on the contrary, I found arts, sculptures and handicrafts of the highest quality and of matchless excellence, depicting India down the sweep of the five thousand years.
The dances of India are fascinating and its music enchanting. The paintings of India are unique, peerless and unparalleled. And Indian cookery? It is indeed tastier than any American or Continental cuisine. I have now become a permanent admirer of your country and dream of it every night.
My curiosity about your beautiful, artistic and rich cultural heritage cannot be satisfied unless I pay a visit to the land of Taj Mahal, the Himalayas, the Ganga and its treasures of arts, artists and artisans.
Therefore, I am planning to visit India next winter and will be grateful for any help and guidance in connection therewith.
Yours faithfully,
