July 25,
Dear Raman,
I have just now received your affectionate letter dated the 20th instant, informing me about the unavoidable circumstances which prevented you from joining us on a holiday trip to Dehradun and Mussoorie. I hope the relative, whose sudden sickness had prevented you from undertaking the trip with us to the Queen of Hills, must have fully recovered by now.
As planned, we left our residence on the 15th July by a chartered bus at 10.00 a.m. In the final count we were only 10 boys and six girls in the group. At about 11.00 a.m. we stopped for a while at the Canal Bank Restaurant and had our breakfast on the bank of the Upper Ganga Canal. After enjoying the panoramic view for half an hour, we set out on the onward journey reaching Dehradun at about 4.00 p.m. and went straight to the Rest Camp where my uncle had already booked a vacant bungalow for us for the duration of our trip. In the evening we went sight-seeing in the fashionable areas of the town. In the forenoon next day we spent our time watching the Mall Road and other areas of Mussoorie with the help of binoculars from the top of the bungalow. Then we visited the Indian Petroleum Institute, Forest Re- search Institute and Sahastradhara in Dehradun.
After spending four days in Dehradun, we went to Mussoorie. Some of the girls in the group were really terrified to see the zig- zag road with steep height and hairpin bends. When at Mussoorie, we set up our camp in a hotel on the Mall Road and went out sight-seeing. Here also we enjoyed watching the romantic Doon Valley down with the help of binoculars. During our week-long stay at Mussoorie, we saw the Library, Landour, Lansdowne and a number of other spots known for their scenic beauty. We also visited the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy of National Administration, where recruits to the IAS receive their training. After enjoying our stay at Mussoorie to our heart’s content for a week, we came back to Dehradun.
After staying here for one more day, we returned to our place by the same route, not missing a second visit to the Canal Bank Restaurant on the bank of the Ganga Canal.
Dear Raman, you will not believe it, our trip was really full of sheer enjoyment and seeing sights with our own eyes about which we had only heard from others earlier. But believe it, my dear Raman, that during all these days of fun and frolic, I did not forget you for a single moment. I hope you must have also missed my company all these days, and will visit us at the earliest convenience.
Please convey my warm regards to all members of your family.
Yours sincerely,
