Should Students Participate in Politics?

Politics has been called the last refuge of a scoundrel. A person, who has been rejected by decent society or who himself can- not conform to the norms and values of a decent society, usually takes to politics. Most politicians are self-centered, unscrupulous and valueless; they are held responsible for most ills of the society today. In this context, it is not advisable for students to participate in politics at this formative stage in their life.

Politicians lure away innocent students for transitory gains. In reality, they wish to advance their own interests in order to have pockets of power and influence. Once they have succeeded in making students participate in their dirty games, they either dis-card them or start using them in order to make the both ends meet. This leads to frustration among the students. They start losing interest in their studies and other normal activities. They adopt the politicians’ methods of strikes, lockouts, gheraos, etc. to get even their slightest and most trivial demands and grievances fulfilled. They go on hunger strikes for the most insignificant of reasons-whether it is a tough question paper in the examination, a strict invigilator in their room or the lavatory taps leaking. They start losing all sense of right and wrong. Politics becomes the guiding force of their lives. Following the example set by their mentors, the students resort to unfair means in the examination and challenge the authorities who warn them against their use. They lose all respect for their teachers and elders and start mouthing half-backed political slogans at the slightest opportunity.

For these reasons, I strongly believe that students should not participate in politics. Only when they grow up and can see things for themselves should they decide whether they wish to adopt politics as a career or find their own path in life.
