Into Thin Air
Materials Required:
- Measuring cup
- Soda bottle
- Pie plate
- Water
The change of liquid into vapor is known as Evaporation. Water evaporates into the air. Morning dew collected on a leaf is concentrated by noon on a hot day.
How long will a cup of water take to evaporate? There are certain factors involved in it, namely movement of the air, its dryness and the temperature.
Among those, the surface area exposed to the air makes a big difference in evaporation. If water is poured into a pie plate, it will evaporate faster than when poured into a close surfaced bottle.
With a measuring cup, pour one and a half cup of water into the pie plate and another into the soda bottle. Now place them by a window, where there is sun.
Check regularly and make a note of which one dries first.
You can also carry out a separate test to see which of the three i.e. water, soda and juice evaporate first.
Use three pie plates and pour some from each bottle on them.
Keep them by the window and conduct a study.
