Scene at The Railway Station

The scene at a railway station is very interesting. But I saw a totally different scene the other day. It was a stormy night. Rain was coming in torrents. The light had failed. There was darkness everywhere on the platform. My mother was coming by Toofan Express. The train was due to arrive at 2 a.m. So, I reached the railway station an hour earlier.

There was nobody on the platform at that time. The bookstall was closed. No vendor could be seen. Even the coolies had gone home. The railway overbridge presented a deserted sight.

Two or three goods trains were standing on platform No. 3. There was a perfect silence. It was often broken by the whistle of the engine. Some bags and bundles were lying on the platform. Two or three dogs were roaming about. Even they seemed to be very dangerous at that time. I looked again and again in the direction from which the train was to come. I saw a dim light. I understood that the train was about to steam in. Suddenly a ticket collector appeared on the platform. Some passengers who had been dozing in the waiting room also appeared on the scene. The lonely and deserted place came back to life again.

The train reached its destination. My mother was, perhaps, the only passenger who alighted from the train. The passengers got into the train. Tea was in great demand. But there was none at the platform to serve the passengers tea.

The rain did not stop; we had to spend the night in the waiting room. At about 5 a.m., the rain stopped. We hired a rickshaw and reached home.

How dreadful the scene was!
