Many of the diseases, which afflict people who do office jobs, are the direct result of a sedentary lifestyle. Do you agree?

It is an accepted fact that the workplace has changed a lot. The manual jobs of the past gave way to computerized and machinated workplace. Hence works these days are more and more sedentary in nature. Hence some people like to attribute the ailments of modern days to the modern ways of living. In my opinion, though it can be undeniably said that this `deskbound lifestyle can create health problems, it is not conclusively shown that this is the sole culprit behind the health problems.

It has been proved indubitably that sitting jobs may indeed lead to high blood pressure, obesity and heart attacks. This is because they spend long hours of physically inactive work. As a result, they do not spend ample time on physical activities. However, there is a counter argument that such people can balance the hours they spend sitting at desk by joining fitness clubs where they can exercise or play sport. These clubs encourage their members to watch their diet and to take part in physical activities. People who do not want to join these clubs will often take walks during their lunch hour, or even jog. So, one cannot blame sedentary work for the health problems one faces.

Furthermore, it seems that not only office workers, but people from all walks of life are afflicted by such diseases. In fact no such illness has been found that is peculiar to office workers. They are prone to the same diseases as everyone else. In addition, they are protected from many hazards, which afflict other workers. For example, working at a desk is much safer than mining or being a professional racing ‘car driver.

To sum up, it seems fair to say that, although a modern day office worker spends a lot of time sitting down, he or she does not have to have a sedentary lifestyle.
