There is an increasing demand for banning smoking in public places. Do you think this will help stop smoking? If not, what ways can be adopted to control smoking?
It is a well known fact that smoking is injurious to health. Smoke is unhealthy and suffocating. So, there is an increasing demand for banning smoking in public places. In my opinion, not allowing smoking in public places is a good step forward though many more actions should be taken to achieve the target.
Firstly, smoking is harmful for both smokers and the people nearby. The people near to a smoker inhale what he exhales and this ‘passive smoking’ is even more dangerous than smoking. Smokers and non-smokers meet at many places like offices, buses, hotels and so on. So, considering the bad effects of smoking on individual’s health, environment as well as individual rights, it should be banned in public places. What can be done in this connection is to make smoking zones in market places and offices so that smokers can do so by keeping themselves in isolation.
However, simple banning will not improve the situation much. To illustrate, smoking is glamorized through advertisements. More and more young boys and girls are attracted by this. The young generation thinks that those who smoke are smart, modern and intellectual. Even the statutory warning on the cigarette packets does not stop them. So, to make people stop smoking, there should be public awareness campaigns. Also, bad effects of smoking should be taught extensively through curriculum. Furthermore, heavy tax should be levied on cigarettes.
In total, it can be said that barring smoking in public places will be highly beneficial for non-smokers. However, to make people stop smoking, extensive education is required.
