Creative artists should always be given the freedom to express their own ideas (in words, pictures, music or film) in whichever way they wish. There should be no government restrictions on what they do. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Some people believe that artists should be allowed to express their ideas free from any government control. In my opinion, it is highly necessary for a J country to have adequate control over its artists for a large number of reasons.

First of all, art has the power to influence and enslave human mind. It has the potential to mould the thinking of people. Hence there is the possibility of art being misused by anti-social elements. For example, in a country like India where the population is divided into thousands of groups based on caste, creed, color and finance, art can be used to injure the sentiments of group. This will have serious impact on the integrity of a nation.

However, one can argue that imposing rules and regulations is not the right way. According to this class of thought, freedom of expression is the keynote of any art. If there is governmental control, what artists produce will be distorted. This can have an adverse effect on the quality of the art. They claim that art is a mere expression of one’s thoughts and the only purpose of art is entertainment. So it will not affect the society in any way. Yet, one should remember the fact that it is not only the educated and adults who enjoy art, it also reaches children and the uneducated. The latter may not be able to distinguish between reality and imagination. Hence, artists cannot be allowed to do anything they wish.

To sum up, government supervision on art is aimed at the well-being of society though some artists find it an obstacle.
