Which religions are followed in the East?
In India, the main religion is Hinduism, which developed about 4,000 years ago. Hindus believe that they will be reborn when they die and that their soul will inhabit another body. By leading a good life, the soul will progress to perfection.
Buddhism developed from Hinduism in the sixth century before Christ and Buddhists follow the teachings of a priest known as the Buddha (enlightened one). They worship no god, but try to lead good lives to achieve a state of nirvana (blessed peace). Buddhism is no longer much found in India, but has spread to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia along with Islam and Hinduism.
The two main traditional Chinese religions are Confucianism and Taoism, named after Confucius and Lao Tzu, who both lived in the sixth century before Christ. Confucius taught that people should study and use their knowledge for good; Taoism preaches that they should live in simplicity and humility. Buddhism is the third main Chinese religion.
The traditional religion of Japan is. Shinto. It developed in ancient Japan from nature worship and has-a great number of gods and spirits.
