Role of Leaves
Leaves not only help plants in making food, they also cause loss of water through evaporation. Most plants and trees shed their (k- leaves before winter so that they can prevent loss of water and be able to survive the cold months. Shedding of leaves is not as simple as it sounds because plants and trees have to retain the ability to reproduce new leaves after winter and also be able to continue the process of manufacturing food. Leaves get their green colouring from a pigment they contain called chlorophyll. Prior to the onset of winter, plants withdraw chlorophyll from their leaves and store it. The loss of chlorophyll gives the leaves a brown colour and they gradually become brittle and fall of. Once winter is over fresh leaves are regenerated and the stored chlorophyll fed into them and the cycle continues.
