The Menace of Dowry

The evil practice of dowry has assumed and alarming proportion these days. Hardly a day passes when we do not hear of a married girl becoming a victim of dowry. The monster of dowry has already blasted many a happy meadow of married life. It is a matter of sorrow that boys are sold in the open market. The demands of the boy’s presents go on increasing. The parents of the girl spend their life-earning on the marriage of their daughter. When the marriage becomes a wreck, they have a cold sighs. Even so, the rich display their wealth while the poor go off their moorings in providing dowry. Life has become nightmarish for the people of the middle class. The system of dowry was started with noble idea. In good old days, the bride brought with her some presents to make a start in life. But with the passage of time, it became as hard-heated practice. The evil system must be done away with. In many families, the birth of a female child is considered to be a burden. The sooner this evil practice is dispensed with, the better it is. The anti-dowry laws should be strictly enforced. Boys and girls should come forward and take a vow not to take or give dowry. Mothers at home should be discouraged to give dowry. People should be educated on the subject through an extensive use of radio and television. Let us hope that this monster of dowry would soon the drive out of the country.
