Scenes at a Village Well

A village well — a busy haunt of the village men and women in  the morning and in the evening. Women are there with their pitchers. It is an important  meeting-place for them. Water-carriers are also there with their vessels. Buckets are lowered  and pulled up. The wheel and axle produce a creaking noise.  Scenes at the well. Women are  drawing water and filling their pitchers. Others are waiting for their turn at the pulley.  Sometimes quarrels arise about turns. Everybody tries for the first turn. Men and children bathing. Some washing their garments. Others telling beads and chanting hymns and mantras. Here  one is praying; there another is watering the pipal tree or the tulsi plant while another is  throwing water towards the sun.  Such are the lovely scenes one witnesses at a village well every morning and evening.
