A college/ school canteen is a necessity and it is generally situated at a stone’s throw from the main building. 

Every college/ school has a canteen. It is a popular place with students and professors. This is the most crowded place. Students can be seen wandering about near the canteen. Some of them keep inside the canteen talking or eating. College students come here during the free periods. They come to take tea and eating. The presence of many boys and girls makes it a jolly place.

The canteen contractor is popular with the students. Students are generally without money. They want to buy things on credit. Our college had good furniture. There are waiters to serve.

Small parties are held in the college canteen. A rich student who wins a college election gives a party these friends. Some rich boys give parties on their birthdays. The parties are full of short speeches and jokes. The canteen contractor has to keep the students happy. Slow service and bad refreshment make the students and jokes. The eatables supplied by him are also of good quality.

Our college canteen is a busy centre of student activities. Here students discuss college politics, films, professors and girls. There is nothing but sweets and rumors about the girls.

I read in a very big school. Likewise, its canteen is also quite big. It is situated in one corner of the school so that its smoke and smells do not reach the offices and the class-rooms.

The canteen comprises a number of rooms. One room serves the purpose of a pantry where the raw material for preparing eatables is stored.

 One room is meant for the contractor and his servants who are busy in making the various sweet and saltish preparations.

There is a big hall where there is a large show-case in which all the preparations are displayed. The contractor instead of sitting in his own room often prefers to sit at the showcase, during the peak time, in particular. In fact, he has frequently to move to the preparation room also to see that the servants are doing their work properly.

In the canteen we can get sweets, confectionery items, fast food, cold drinks, etc. However, the thing which has the maximum demand is the tea with …samosas.

The contractor is a kind, jolly man. But he is very strict to his workers. He takes great pains to see that the eatables are prepared hygienically. Still, a school canteen committee supervises his work and makes surprise visits to the canteen to test the quality of preparations as well as to see that agreed rates are only charged from students and short measures are not given to them.

In the hall there are chairs and tables in a large number. But there are also separate small rooms for teachers and girl students.

There is a great rush in the canteen during the recess period. Thereafter, it often wears a deserted look.
