Iran : Founder of Zoroastrianism
Birth -Death Around 400 B.C.
The sage who founded Zoroastrianism, the religion of the Parsis, was Zarathustra, who lived in Iran in about 6th century B.C.. Zarathustra gave the message of compassion love and tolerance and kindled knowledge among the people who were clinging to superstitions and religious ignorance. They were polytheistic in their religious beliefs. Zarathustra abolished polytheism and established two dominant spirits in life: Ahura-Mazda (the spirit of light and god); and Ahriman (the spirit of evil I or darkness).
The exact date of birth of Zarathustra is not confirmed but from the available evidence, scholars believe that he lived in Iran around 6th century B.C. It is, however, certain that he was born in a royal family. Legends go that he laughed the very day he was’ born. Zarathustra as a child was endowed with exceptional abilities. He renounced the world when he was just 15.
After several years of hard meditation in seclusion Zarathustra got enlightenment. He had also a divine vision of Ahura Mazda (`wise lord’). After he became enlightened, he set about to preach his faith. After initial hurdles, he became successful in having a large following. He never deviated from his path of righteousness. He also converted the king Vishtasp and many other kings to his faith, the Zoroastrianism. It is believed, that when he was 77, he was killed at the behest of an irreligious Shah.
