Surendra Nath Bannerjee is one of those national leaders who played a leading role in the establishment of the Indian National Congress. He held extremist views and was considered a militant till Lokmanya Tilak’s arrival on the scene. In the beginning, he was assigned the task of liaison with the government.. He was the Congress representative to highlight the difficulties, problems and views of the organisation to the British government through appeals, petitions and deputations. Al-though, he was honoured with knighthood and became ‘Sir Surendra Nath’, he could not toe the British line of thought. He felt he was being made a pawn by the British. He wanted much more for India than mere verbal assurances.
Surendra Nath was born in Bengal. He cleared his ICS examination when twenty-one. For a while, he worked as a professor of English before jumping into national politics. He chaired the 11th Congress session of 1895 and the Ahmedabad session of 1902.
Surendra Nath made his mark as a writer also. His autobiography A Nation in the Making is a masterpiece. He was one of the most influential leaders of Bengal of that time and was emulated and respected by the youth. “Ripon College” is a living example of his incessant and massive work in the field of education.
