Prince Ottovon Bismarck
Germany : German. Statesman
Born : AD 1815 Died : AD 1898
Bismarck’s mission in life was to unite the small Prussian states into a single nation. Germany was divided into smaller states and a portion of it was called Prussia, which formed an important part. Bismarck had a towering personality and he nursed an ambition to play an important role in the German polity, right from his younger days.
His efforts saw him as leader of Prussian council of ministers in 1862. Next year, he attacked Denmark to display his power. In 1866, he attacked Austria on a trifle matter. He won this battle also as he did against Denmark. Bismarck achieved many things through hardwork and a show of strength. He first organised and united the Northern states, and did likewise to southern states and formed a unified Germany and was made its first Chancellor.
In those days, Germany had Chancellor as well as Emperor. Chancellor was head of the government while Emperor was head of the State. Bismarck did his best for the upliftment of Germany. When Kaiser ascended to the throne, he made Bismarck a ‘Prince’. Bismarck was considered to be a very important person throughout Europe.
Though Bismarck fought many small battles, his main aim was to unite Germany. He always took keen interest in the welfare and training of German Army during peacetime also. He himself did not favour wars but during his lifetime militarism grew in Germany which laid foundations for the two world wars in future.
