Pablo Ruizy Picasso is considered one of the most remarkable personalities of the 20th century. He was the most brilliant and creative artist of his times. In 1906, together with Braque, he introduced a new style of painting called ‘Cubism’ which represented things in three dimensions. He was also a pioneer in `abstract art’ and set new traditions in painting during his 78 years’ long artistic career. Picasso was an artist of stupendous power and range, and made his contribution to different forms of art viz. sculpture, ceramics, graphic illustrations and stage designs. Picasso was a prolific artist and in his long and distinguished career he produced about 13,500 paintings, 34,000 illustrations, 400 sculptures and countless other artistic creations. The total value of his works is estimated at over 500 million pounds. Two Brothers (1905) and Seated Harlequins (1972) are his two most precious paintings. Picasso’s paintings still fetch enormous sums at auctions. One painting of Picasso SelfPortrait of Picasso done in 1901 was sold for 6.3 lakh dollars in New York on 21 May, 1921.
Picasso’s painting Les Demoiselles d’ Avignon (Girls of Avignon I, 1937) is one of the most important paintings in the history of modem art. An another painting Guernica (197) depicting the savagery of the Spanish Civil War is probably his best known work.
Pablo Picasso was born on 5th October 1881, in Spain. His father Jose Ruizy Picasso was an art teacher. Picasso was a born artistic genius. He started drawing beautiful pictures even as a nine year old child and soon his extraordinary genius as an artist came to light. In 1904, Picasso came to Paris, where he married Fernando Olivier. Picasso dedicated his whole life to art and he completely dominated the world art scene for half a century.
Picasso passed away in 1972 at the age of 91.
