Enricho Fermi
Italy : A Scientist of Atomic Energy
Born : AD 1901 Died : AD 1954
Fermi was a brilliant scientist. He was born in Rome, Italy on 29 September 1901. He was inclined towards science from the very beginning. Apart from his textbooks he read so much that by the time he reached college, he had acquired so much knowledge about physics that was greater than his teacher.
By that time, Atom had become an important part of Physics. Marie Curie, Rutherford, and other scientists had done lot of research work on atomic theory and it was well known that atomic energy has vast scope for development. Fermi chose this as his research subject. He did lot of experiments on radium. He was awarded the Noble Prize in 1938. However, he left Italy alongwith his wife when he went to the Stockholm to receive the Nobel Prize. He did not agree with the policies of Dictator Mussolini and his friend Hitler. He therefore, came to America.
Nothing better could have happened to America. He wanted to go ahead with establishment of an atomic reactor and take full advantage of the developments of atomic energy. Who else than Fermi for this? He was entrusted with the job and was successful in it in 1942.
In spite of being extremely busy Fermi found time to play tennis and do skiing. He died in 1954.
