Babar
India : Founder of Moghul Empire
Born : AD 1483 Died : AD 1530
The word “Babar”, by which name the first Moghul Emperor in India is known, means a “lion”. Babar’s real name was Jahiruddin Mohammad. He was of Taimur lung and Ghengis Khan, famous in history for their tales of cruelty as well as bravery. But Babar was a shade different from his illustrious ancestors. Whereas his predecessors reached Delhi, plundered the conquered land and escaped with the booty, leaving a wailing land to nurse its wounds, Babar chose to accept it as his own country and he stayed here to become a Hindustani. He never considered himself an alien. He vanquished Sultan Lodhi, captured the throne of Delhi, and established an empire after annexing the surrounding kingdoms to his territory. The foundation stone of Moghul rule in India was thus laid.
India was then divided into small kingdoms, fiefdoms and principalities. Babar conquered a large area and brought the land under one rule. After a long time, here was a ruler who was trying to knit the territory into one body. By 1527, Babar was able to bring out his supremacy over a large portion of India. It goes to his credit that instead of leaving India after looting it he thought of being an integral part of it. He gave a stable administration to various provinces under him and brought them some semblance of law and order.
Babar had great aesthetic sense. He patronised art and some of the dormant and dead arts got a new lease of life. Babar also wrote his memoirs known as War Nama.
