Anwar Al-Sadaat
Egypt : President of Egypt
Born : AD 1918 Died : AD 1981
Mohammad Anwar Al-Sadaat was born in a farmer’s family. After initial education, he joined the army and there he came into contact with Colonel Abdul Gamal Nasser. Nasser and some of. the fellow-officers staged a coup-d’etat against King Farookh and declared Egypt a republic. Later, Col. Nasser became the President of Egypt. In 1961, Sadaat was chosen as General Secretary of the National Congress. Around this time, he was made Vice-President by Nasser so as to train him completely in the nation’s administration. Sadaat became President in 1970.
In 1973, Sadaat attacked Israel to liberate the portion of Egypt that had been occupied by Israel. He also showed foresightedness in bringing about peace in the Middle East. He visited Israel and signed a treaty, a feat unthinkable in the Arab World and for this, he was awarded Nobel Prize for peace in 1978. Nothing mattered to him more than welfare of Egypt. He was not bothered by the dissent of some of the hard-core Arabs of his Peace initiatives with Israel. He had only one aim, i.e. to bring peace in his country. The world was, therefore, astounded when he was killed by his own soldiers in a March-past parade.
