Science Project on “Refraction in a Telescope”, Project Experiment Topics on Light, Sound, Maths, Optical Illusion for Class 8, 9, 10 and 12 Students.

Refraction in a Telescope

Materials Required:

  1. Two hand magnifying glasses
  2. Modelling clay
  3. Table near a window
  4. White paper
  5. Sunny day
  6. Two pieces of cardboard

A telescope allows objects to appear close. It is made up of the Greek word “tele” meaning ‘from afar’ and “skopos”, meaning ‘viewer’. Telescopes gather light and focus it and this allows objects to appear closer than they actually are. Telescopes reveal things in the sky which the common eye just cannot see, like the rings on Saturn, craters on the moon and also the bands around Jupiter.

There are various kinds of telescopes now. The one that uses two lenses instead of one, is called a “refracting telescope”. To find out how they work, stand up two magnifying glasses on a table with the help of some modelling clay. Place one magnifying glass on the middle of a table facing a window. Now hold a piece of white paper on the side opposite the window and keep moving the paper away from the glass, until the image outside the window starts taking focus. Remove the paper and stand the other magnifying glass at the same position. Placing your eye behind the other glass, keep moving behind till a picture of the object gains focus. Analyze whether the objects seem bigger.
