Paragraph on “How could Beethoven write music if he was deaf?” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

How could Beethoven write music if he was deaf?

Beethoven was not alone in being able to compose music without using the piano or any other instrument. Many composers can hear the music in their heads and write it down immediately without playing it. It is quite easy to recognise pairs of notes by comparing them to a well-known sound or tune. For example, the cuckoo always sings two notes that differ by the musical interval of a major third. So when a major third occurs in  a melody, which is quite often, it can be  recognised by its similarity to the call of a cuckoo.

Of course, if Beethoven had been deaf all his life, he would never have become a musician at all. He began to lo.se his hearing in about 1800, when he was 30 years old. By this time, he was a great composer and fully able to write music without the aid of the piano. Deafness did not therefore prevent him com-posing but it did stop Beethoven from playing the piano and, of course, he never heard his later compositions played. Although we can feel sorry for him, Beethoven’s deafness forced him to compose because he could not play, and he probably became a greater composer because of his deafness.
