Where is Holy Island?
Holy Island, or Lindisfarne, is an island in the North Sea about 3 km (2 miles) from the coast of Northumberland. It was here that St Cuthbert (AD 635—AD 687) came from Ireland to preach Christianity to the Northumbrians. In AD 793, the Norsemen landed, burning the monastery and killing many of the monks, as they did to numerous settlements up and down the coast of Britain. The survivors rebuilt the church, but in AD 875, the monks feared another invasion and they fled to the mainland with St Cuthbert’s body and other holy relics, including the magnificent Lindisfarne Gospels. These gospels had been copied by the monks during the seventh century and the beautifully decorated pages make it one of the great art treasures of the early Christian Church.
