1. You switch on the lights in your room and it immediately brightens up. Then you turn on the record player to hear some good music.

2. Suddenly the phone rings and you answer it. But many years ago, people did not have electric bulbs, record players, or telephones.

3. So who invented these? The answer is Thomas Alva Edison. Edison was taught by his mother at home. His parents were not rich.

4. He helped them by selling newspapers, fruits, and candles on trains.

5. He had a curious mind and loved to experiment with chemical liquids and powders.

6. With the pocket money he got he started buying things for his laboratory.

7. Edison’s first invention was telegraphy by which messages could be sent to far-off places by electric signals.

8. Then came, the telegraph machine, the voting recorder, and the microphone.

9. The phonograph and the electric bulb were his other famous inventions.

10. The world is grateful to this great scientist who invented so many things.
