The Paths of Glory Lead but to the Grave
We spend our lives pursuing our various goals. While some of us succeed in these pursuits, others fail. But, despite the uncertainty about the future, we are not prepared to abandon our desires and ambitions. We also ignore the fact that, whatever fame we may gain or whatever wealth we may acquire, we cannot hold on to either, forever. At the end of all the uncertainties of life is death — the only real and permanent certainty as far as humanity is concerned. Death will take away from us, in one moment, all that we have achieved in life. Death also shows us the futility of acquiring more than what we need to be happy in life. Such an indication should nullify our greed and over-ambition. However, as an absolute certainty, death should only cause in us, due to recognition of its inevitability, not a feeling of fear or anxiety. The recognition of death should not discourage those activities that are necessary to live. Our attitude to death serves its purpose best if it helps us moderate our ambitions.
