Rabindra Nath Tagore

 

        Rabindra Nath Tagaore was one of the greatest man of the present age. He is known as Gurudeva. His ‘Gitanjali’ won him the Nobel Prize.

He was born in a rich Bengali family on May 1861. His father Mahrishi Devendranath Tagore was a well-known figure in Bengal.

At the age of Seventeen, Tagore went to England. He joined the University College, London. But he took no degree. He returned after a few years.

At the age of twenty-four the burden of managing his father’s estate fell on him. Still he kept studying and writing. Gradually he became a great writer. He wrote essays, plays, poems, short stories and novels. His stories are realistic. He opened the head and heart of man in his stories and novels. Besides Gitanjali, his well known works are ‘The Gardener’, Chitra and Gora. There is hardly any branch of literature that he did not touch. And whatever he touched he gave a golden colour to it. Tagore visited several European countries. Every where he received a very warm welcome. His learned speeches were admired everywhere.

He came in touch with Mahatama Gandhi. He joined the national movement in Bengal. He found his school at Shantiniketan Bolpur. In 1913 he was University conferred on him the honorary Degree of D.Litt.in 1914. The same year he was Knighted. But the news of the cruelties done to the helpless Indians at Jalianwala Bagh shocked him so much that he renounced his knighthooh.

In 1941 the whole India celebrated his eighty first birthday. But a few months after that, he passed away. His death was mourned all over the world. Really he was a great poet. He was greater still as a man. India is proud of him.
