Trailanga Swami
Mahatma Trailanga Swami was born in a Zamindar family in 1622 at Viziyanagram in Andhra Pradesh. His nick name was Sivaram. His father’s name was Narasimha Rao and mother’s name was Vidyabati Devi. Trailanga Swami was present in his mortal body for nearly 275 years. During his long life, he spent nearly 150 years at Varanasi.
Since his early life, Sivaram was unattached with the family life and always engaged with the saintly persons. He was meditated in a lonely place, viz. any burial ground or on the banks of the river. His father died when he was 40 years old and after that he left his home forever, with the kind permission of his mother.
Sivaram had travelled all over India and at the age of 78 years he came to Puskar Tirtha (in Rajasthan). Here he took initiation and sannyasa from Guru Bhaskarananda Saraswati and his new name was Trailanga Swami, as he belonged to Telengana (in Andhra Pradesh).
Sivaram then travelled to South India Rameswaram, Kanyakumari etc and went to Nepal, Tibet, Kailash Manas Sarovar etc. From the Uttarakhand, he went to Amarkantak, the source of the river Narmada. He spent eight years on the banks of Narmada and then he reached Varanasi, after visiting Prayag Raj at Allahabad. At Varanasi, he spent nearly 150 years, till his death.
During his stay at Varanasi, his name and fame spread all over India. The renowned Saints and devotees were coming to meet with him. Amongst them — Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Prabhupada Bijoykrishna Goswami, Yogi Shyamacharan Lahiri, Maharajas and Jamindars of different States etc. Always he was in a naked condition. Maximum time he was spending on the Ganges, as the holy river was his mother (Ganga Mai). At the beginning, the then British Magistrate of Varanasi was imprisoned him, but afterwards realising his enchantic and miraculous way of living, released him with honour. Trailanga Swami’s Teachings :
“Each and every human being is potentially divine. The main source of energy and power is lying within him, but one should endeavour it by constant prayer, penance and by self control. This world is the by-product of Siva-Sakti. Primarily, Self-realisation is-absolutely essential”. He also said, “Unflinching faith and devotion lead a man to salvation. Man has forgotten his own-self, i.e. one has suffered mostly in this world. He should be free from any bondage, both mental and physical.”
After spending for a long period of 275 years in his mortal life, he returned to his heavenly abode in 1897.
