Advantages and Disadvantages of The Present Educational System in India-English Essay, Paragraph, Speech for Class 9, 10, 11 and 12 Students.

Advantages and Disadvantages of The Present Educational System in India

Although reforms have been introduced from time to time to make our education system in tune with the needs of the day, it still remains archaic and obsolete. We are still producing an army of clerks and white-collar workers through the system that was introduced by Macaulay more than a hundred and fifty years ago. The present system needs far-reaching reforms and radical changes in the form and content of our education system.

But the system has its own advantages in that it has stood the test of time. It inculcates in the pupils a sense of learning, devotion and dedication to the task in hand. Even the much-maligned cramming has its own advantages in enabling us to remember important facts and data in the present age of computer. No amount of mechanisation can be a substitute for human memory and faculties of thinking. All these aspects were kept in view while framing the new Education Policy in 1986. Hopefully, it will usher in a new era in our education system and make it more realistic and job-oriented. It takes into consideration all the five important heads of education, viz., primary education, secondary education, college education, technical education and adult education. The Ninth Five-Year Plan aims at universalisation of education and the complete eradication of illiteracy among the people in the age group of 15 to 35 years.

However, the present system does not make education absorbing and interesting. It makes pupils run away from education. This is one of the serious pitfalls that has led to the rapid deterioration of standards in our educational institutions all over.

Another disadvantage in the present system is the unthinking, herd-like mentality of offering college and university education to all and sundry. This must be stopped. Senior Secondary or 10+2 should be qualification enough to get into any job or vocation in life. Crowding of our colleges and universities is a major disadvantage of the present system which offers them nothing, not even gainful employment, after the students have obtained their degrees and diplomas. Higher education must be made selective.

This applies to technical education also. Quotas and reservations take away the element of merit from our doctors, engineers and technocrats. Merit should be the only consideration for admission into such courses. Another area which puts the present system at a disadvantage is that of adult education. Efforts in this direction have been lop-sided and haphazard so far. Planned and concerted measures must be taken in order to make the dream of adult education more realisable in the near future.
