Locating Pollutants

Materials Required:

  1. Two small drinking glasses
  2. Pepper
  3. Paper coffee filter

Water, our basic necessity, is taken for granted by us. Make a list of all the things, in which water is used inside and around your house.

Without water, we will not be able to survive.

Owing to its importance, we must keep our sources of water clean. Once water is polluted or dirty, it is often hard to filter it and make it clean again.

Sprinkle about ten shakes of pepper from a pepper-shaker into a small glass of water.

Let it be still for two or three minutes. Place a paper coffee filter over the top of an empty drinking glass.

Slowly, pour the pepper-polluted water through the filter and into the glass.

Did the filter help remove all the black pieces of pepper? Does the water look clear again? Even if it looks clear, maybe the filter did not really get rid of all the pollutants.

Taste the water. Does it still taste like pepper, even though you can’t see any? Pollute clean water with other types of food, like salt and then use the filter to make the water clean of it.
