China : Philosopher who stressed on character

Born : 551 B.C. Died : 478 B.C.

Confucius was a Chinese philosopher and social reformer. He was born at Shantung in China. He had to earn his bread from the early age of eight and was married at 16. His real name was Kung Futse. After his marriage, he blossomed into a philosopher and started preaching his ideas to the people. He kept himself away from all the worldly temptations and lived a simple life. He died at the age of 71. 

Confucius laid great stress on good character. He preached that people should respect their parents. He held a prominent place amongst philosophers and religious reformers. He was a great metaphysician and thinker. He occupied many high posts because of his accomplishments and prepared many practical plans for eradication of poverty in China. He opened a school in which many people took lessons on virtuousness. He knew many languages and arts. He has written about his experiences in life in a book entitled Chin Chiuking.

At one time Confucius’ teachings herd such a sway in China that it attained the status of a religion. In 120 B.C. his thoughts became the official religion of China. Even now, many people follow his teachings and have great respect for their ancestors and lay stress on good moral character. With the passage of time and change of circumstances, his teachings retain their eternal values. Confucius believed that morality should rule the state and society. He suggested many ways to avoid class conflict. He laid stress on the rule, “Do not treat others in a manner that you would not like others to treat-you.”
