William Shakespeare Plays

Thirty-eight plays are believed to have been written by William Shakespeare. The range of these plays is enormous and express almost every emotion known to man. Not much is known about the early life of this great playwright except that he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Eng-land and that he wrote a sequence of beautiful sonnets before going to London to become an actor and writer with one of the leading theatrical companies. During this time he wrote comedies and tragedies. several chronicle histories, the romantic comedy Two Gentlemen of Venma and the romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet.

In 1592 the London theatres were closed because of the terrible plague of London, and did not reopen for two years. When they did open, Shakespeare was writing a new kind of romantic comedy in which characters were more important than the story. Among these are The Merchant of Venice, As You Like it, and Twelfth Night. His historical plays became truer to life, and he selected material to show the English people how England had become what she was.

By 1600 he had become interested in tragedy and to this period belong perhaps the most famous of all his plays — Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and King Lear. After this he turned to a new kind of romantic comedy, more serious and more tender than before —sometimes seeming very close to tragedy —  and among there are Cymbeline, the Winter’s Tale and The Tempest.

In about 1610 Shakespeare returned to his home at Stratford- upon- Avon, where he lived with his wife, Anne Hathaway, in quiet obscurity for several years. He seemed quite uninterested in the preservation of his own work and a complete collection of his plays and poems was not published until seven years after his death, in 1623.
