Why is the home of the Beaver so interesting?

The beaver, which lives in North America and northern Europe, has a skilful and elaborate way of damming up a stream or river in order to build a house that is partly under water.

He does this because he has to make sure he has enough water to get into and out of his house easily when the water ices over in winter. Although most of his house is above water level, the entrance is beneath the water.

A beaver spends almost his entire life in the water and his house, called a lodge, is his permanent home, both in summer and winter.

He grows to about 74 cm (29 in ) and has a thick coat of reddish- brown fur and long flattened tail. He flaps this tail , making a loud noise on the surface of the water, as a warning of danger to other beavers.

He also has powerful chisel – like incisor teeth. He uses these to cut down small trees which when combined with mud, stones and twigs, he very effectively dams up a stream. He then builds his two-roomed, dome shaped lodge, of the same materials, living in one and storing his food of bark, leaves, roots and twinges, in the other.

In the autumn the beaver smothers his lodge with mud and when this freezes in winter it forms a barriers to wind and cold – and to his enemies, the bear and the fox. In the spring, usually three or four young are born in the lodge.
