Paragraph on “When was the armoured tank first used?” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

When was the armoured tank first used?

The tank first came into use in 1916 during World War I. The British developed this fighting vehicle to try and break the deadlock that had occurred between the two sides fighting in France. Neither foot soldiers nor cavalry could survive the murderous rain of bullets that marked any action, but a heavy armoured vehicle armed with powerful guns and moving on caterpillar tracks could travel over any terrain and force back the enemy. The first tanks could only crawl along at walking pace, but they terrified the German soldiers. However, the Germans soon developed tank defences and their own tanks, and the tanks made no difference to the deadlock.

The tank was not the first fighting vehicle to be built. The armoured car was developed in Britain in 1896. However, this vehicle would not have been suitable for the ragged terrain of the battlefront. Neither would the strange armed quadricycle shown on the opposite page. It carried a machine gun mounted behind a bullet-proof screen, and was powered by a small motor. It was demonstrated in 1899. A year later, a true forerunner of the tank appeared in the Boer War in South Africa. The British forces used the armoured steam engine shown below to pull wagons and field guns while under fire. The armour had ports through which the crew could fire weapons in defence.
