When did man begin to discover that there were other continents?

The Greeks had an astonishing knowledge of the world around them, the advances they made in science and astronomy hold good, even today. But the Romans who came to power after them in 500 BC were really better warriors than they were men of thought. The routes they followed for their invasion of England, begun in 55 BC were, on the whole, those already charted by the Egyptians and the Greeks, and so it was not until the Vikings began to invade Britain and explore the Atlantic around AD Boo, that the existence of other continents became known.

The Vikings in their long ships reached Iceland about AD 85o, then Greenland and even the North American coast — they were, in fact, the first discoverers of the New World. However, better map making, or further exploration did not immediately develop from these forays of the Norse sailors, and also the religious attitude of Europeans during the Dark Ages (about AD 476-AD woo) did not encourage new thought. The official view of the very powerful Church during this period, was that the earth was flat and Jerusalem was the centre of the world.

It was not until the fifteenth century and the great Age of Discovery, then aided by the invention of the mariner’s compass, that there was any great improvement in maps and charts. Over the next 400 years, sailors explored the seas to discover the continents of South America and North America; they crossed the Pacific and finally encountered Australia and Antarctica and gained the knowledge and evidence that led to accurate maps being drawn of the world, as we know it today.
