Paragraph on “What is a Light Year?” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

What is a Light Year?

a light year is the unit which is used to measure the distance between astronomical objects. It is the distance traveled by a ray of light in one year, and since light travels at a speed of 300,000 km (186,000 miles) per second, this amounts to nearly ten million million kilometers ( six million million miles)! Even so, the nearest star to the Sun is more than 4 light years away.

The largest telescopes in the world can detect objects that are thousands of millions of light years away. It is important to remember that if light takes 4.2 years to reach us from a star that is 4.2 light years away, then we are seeing that star not as it is now, but as it was 4.2 years ago when the light set out. The further away were look, the further back we are most distant objects in the Universe, we must not forget that we are receiving light which set out before the Earth was formed !
