वर्तमान समय में विद्यार्थी पर बस्ते का बोझ बढ़ता चला जा रहा है। अब यह बोझ उनकी सहनशक्ति से बाहर हो गया है। बस्ते के बढ़ते बोझ ने बालक के स्वाभाविक विकास पर बड़ा प्रतिकूल प्रभाव डाला है। पुस्तको की संख्या इतनी होती जा रही है कि उनको सँभाल पाना उनके लिए कठिन हो गया है। यद्यपि राष्ट्रीय शैक्षिक एवं अनुसंधान प्रशिक्षण परिषद् ने इस बढ़ते बोझ के प्रति कई बार अपनी चिंता प्रकट की है, पर उनकी कथनी और करनी मंे भारी अंतर दृष्टिगोचर होता है। एन.सी.ई.आर.टी. की पुस्तको की संख्या हर वर्ष बढ़ जाती है। पहले पाँच-छह विषयों की एक किताब होती थी, अब एक ही विषय की 3-4 किताबें होती हैं। सामाजिक विज्ञान विषय की ही पाँच-छह पुस्तके है। विज्ञान की कई पुस्तकें हैं। पुस्तकों की मोटाई भी बढ़ रही है। हर साल एक-दो नया विषय भी जुड़ जाता है – कभी आपदा प्रबंधन तो कभी नैतिक शिक्षा, शारीरिक शिक्षा, कम्प्यूटर शिक्षा, योग आदि। इतने विषयों की इनती सारी पुस्तकें बच्चों के बस्ते के भार को बढ़ा ही तो रही हंै। फिर इन सभी विषयों की कापियाँ। आदर्शवादी बातें करने वाले तो बहुत हैं, पर व्यावहारिकता की ओर लोगों को ध्यान नहीं जाता। बच्चों के बस्ते का बोझ तभी कम होगा जब समग्र रूप से सोचा जाएगा और व्यावहारिक दृष्टिकोण अपनाया जाएगा।
